Applying 3-6 inches layer of composted animal manures, clay soil, wood chips, crops clippings, saw dust, leaves, silage and/or finely divided organic matter of any kind over the period, will decrease water evaporation and infiltration almost entirely, keeping moisture to normal and providing the required nutrients to soil and plants
